Carrabba joined Cleveland-Cliffs ("Cliffs") in April 2005 as President and Chief Operating Officer, and assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of Cliffs in September 2006.Mr. Carrabba joined Cliffs from Rio Tinto, a global mining company, where he served for 22 years in a variety of leadership capacities at locations worldwide including the United States, Asia, Australia, Canada, and Europe. Before relocating to Rio Tinto’s Diavik Diamond Mines Inc, in Canada’s Northwest Territory where he served most recently as President and Chief Operating Officer, he spearheaded the development and successful implementation of Rio Tinto’s Six Sigma initiative at its bauxite mining operation in Australia.A native of Ohio, Mr Carrabba earned his bachelor’s degree in geology from Capital University and his MBA from Frostburg State University in Maryland.RICHARD R. MEHANManaging DirectorAge: 54Mr Mehan holds a Bachelor oF economics degree from Monash University. He has 28 years experience in the resources industry with the vast majority being in the traded iron ore industry.
Mr Mehan is in his eighth year with Portman Limited having held the roles of General Manager- Iron Ore, General Manager Marketing and Chief Opertating Officer prior to this appointment as Managing Director. At 1 January 2007 Mr Mehan transferred to Cliffs Asia Pacific Pty Ltd as President and Chief Executive Officer.
MARY LAUREN (LAURIE) BRLASNon-Executive DirectorAge: 50Ms Brlas joined Cliffs as Senior Vice President-Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer in December 2006. Her responsibilities include finance, financial reporting, accounting, financial planning, investor relations, and treasury functions.
Ms Brlas joined Cliffs with an extensive accounting and financial career spanning more than 20 years, most recently as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer of sterilization systems manufacturer STERIS Corporation from 2000 to 2006. Prior to that, she was with OfficeMax from 1995 to 2000, most recently as senior vice president and controller.
Ms Brlas earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from Youngstown State University and is also a Director of Perrigo Company.
WILLIAM R. CALFEENon-Executive DirectorAge: 60William R Calfee was named Executive Vice President-Commercial, North American Iron Ore, in July 2006. In addition to overseeing the unit's sales and marketing activities, he also heads a newly formed Marketing Committee with global commercial sales coordination for all Cliffs' operations.Mr Calfee joined Cliffs in 1972 as an ore sales representative. He assumed increasingly responsible positions in the commercial area before being named Vice President-Ore Sales in 1983. In 1986, Mr Calfee was named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Following the acquisition of Pickands Mather & Co. and further corporate restructuring, he became Senior Executive Vice President in 1989 and assumed his current position in October 1995. An officer in the U.S. Navy, Mr Calfee received his Bachelor of Arts from Williams College , and completed the Advanced Management program at the Graduate School of Business at Harvard University.Mr Calfee is a Trustee of Ideastream (public television and public radio) in Cleveland , Ohio.
DONALD J. GALLAGHERNon-Executive DirectorAge: 55Donald J Gallagher was promoted to President of the North American Business Unit in November 2007. He had previously serves as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of the Company since May 2005 and acted in these positions from July 2006 to December 2006 until the appointment of Ms Brlas. Mr Gallagher joined Cliffs in 1981 as an ore sales representative in the commercial department. He has held various management positions within the Company, and was named Vice President- Sales in August 1998.
A native of Cleveland , Ohio, Mr Gallagher earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Yale University and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University.Mr Gallagher has served as chairman of the Cleveland Section of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (A.I.M.E.) and is currently a member of Financial Executives International, the Iron and Steel Society of the A.I.M.E., and the American Iron and Steel Institute. He is also active in the local community, including serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland.DAVID H. GUNNINGNon-executive DirectorAge: 65Mr Gunning is the fromer Vice Chairman of Cliffs. He joined Cliffs in 2001, retiring in 2007. While at Cliffs, his responsibilities included business development and the execution of Cliffs' corporate strategy.Prior to joining Cliffs, Mr Gunning was a consultant and private investor. Before that, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Capitol American Financial Corporation, which was sold to Conseco Inc, in 1997. For more than 25 years, Mr. Gunning was with the law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue (now known as Jones Day), where he last served as the partner in charge of the firm's worldwide corporate practice. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Mr Gunning earned a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University and received his law degree from Harvard University.He is a Director of Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc, Development Alternatives Inc, and MFS Funds. He is a trustee of the College of Wooster.
MALCOLM H. MACPHERSONNon-Executive DirectorAge: 63Mr Macpherson (BSc, FAusIMM, FTSE) has had extensive experience in the mining and minerals industry at both the operational and executive level. He is a Director of Minara Resources Limited, Titanium Corporation Inc and Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing.
He is also Chairman of the not for profit Independent Living Centre of W.A (Inc).
MICHAEL D. PERROTTNon-Executive DirectorAge: 62 Mr Perrott (BCom, FAIM) has been involved in industries associated with construction, contracting, mining and land development since 1969. He is currently chairman of Port Bouvard Limited, GME Resources Limited, Bone Medical Limited, Gage Roads Brewing Co. Ltd, and is a board member of Schaffer Corporation Ltd. During 2007 also Mr Perrott completed a term as a Board Member for Gage Road Brewing Co Ltd. In February 2008 Mr Perrot accepted a position of the Board on Burrup Fertilizers Pty Ltd.
He is a member of the Board of Notre Dame University and a council member of the National Advisory Council for Suicide Prevention and the State Ministerial Council for Suicide Prevention.
