INDIGENOUS RELATIONS
In Australia Portman is cognisant of the changing
landscape in relation to land access and recognises values
attached to lands by Indigenous Peoples in the form of Native
Title and Aboriginal Heritage and Culture.
Activities undertaken by Portman within its operational areas
are conducted with full regard to the legislative requirements
for ensuring that heritage areas are respected and that due
process is followed in completing Native Title formalities.
In achieving this Portman engages in open and constructive
consultation with the Indigenous groups that have traditional
relationships with the areas of activity, leading to the establishment
of mutually beneficial agreements that provide for:
economic sufficiency through project participation including
direct and indirect employment and traineeship opportunities
and business development associated with operations;
identification and protection protocols of heritage sites; and
the development and implementation of cultural awareness
programmes for Portman employees and contractors.
Portman enters into these arrangements with a strong spirit
of reconciliation and cooperation with a view to establishing
long term, beneficial and harmonious relationships with the
traditional Indigenous groups that are affected by its operations,
whilst acknowledging their particular goals, aspirations,
traditional customs and decision making processes.
